It is important to

• Understand the individual’s perspective. Person-centered planning helps but does not replace clear effective communication from the individual.

• Presume competence and intellect—otherwise you may not create the circumstances in which it can be demonstrated.

• Recognize the effect of the environment and social context (interaction demands, expectations, sensory aspects)

• Involve the individual in developing and directing strategies and supports, recognizing that the individual may not be able to define the needed supports without some trial and error.
