Understand the individual’s perspective. Person-centered planning helps but does not replace clear effective communication from the individual.
Presume competence and intellect—otherwise you may not create the circumstances in which it can be demonstrated.
Recognize the effect of the environment and social context (interaction demands, expectations, sensory aspects)
Involve the individual in developing and directing strategies and supports, recognizing that the individual may not be able to define the needed supports without some trial and error.
